Niche Association Publishing

Did you receive a flyer asking

Could your association

use more money?

(If not, here’s the original.)

I can help you find that money…

and in the process attract more members,

plus retain those already in the fold.

I’m Gordon Burgett. My specialization is niche publishing. Let’s see if this new-found gold applies to your group. If so, for performing an extraordinary service for your members, you might also create a steady and dependable new income font, significantly expand the value that you offer your present and new members, inject new vigor into your convention or conference offerings, and (horrors) maybe even lower your dues!

Associations have a unique, natural advantage that only a small percentage either know about or positively exploit. That’s because association members form a singular bond from which a very profitable niche publishing empire can be quickly and permanently created. Best yet, before investing much time or energy, the feasibility and profit ratio of any project (or the entire empire) can be tested in weekswith only a ripple of risk!

What are the benefits of niche publishing to an association?

u A steady, sizable spurt (even a gush) of new net income!

u Increased loyalty, even loud acclamations of support and praise.

u Perception of the association as the hub of the “best” niche knowledge.

u Better performing, less anxious, more profitable members.

u Increased membership and far less turnover.

Associations pretty much boil down to members gathered in a joined cause and information those members want and need. I’m suggesting that in a literate and digital society it can be both unifying and profitable to significantly expand the niche-shared information, add anything new as it appears, and position the association as the core of that valuable commodity.

Best yet, I can help you make that happen.

Why? Well, because I’m “The Niche Man.

(It does sound corny—and presumptuous, except it’s true!)

Some quick questions and answers

Why aren’t more associations doing it?

Many are dabbling at the edges, but the whole concept was impossible until computers came of age in about 2000. With the advent of small-run presses, print-on-demand, digital or ebooks, and interactivity with the web, the niche field will explode in the next 5-10 years.

By publishing do you mean books?

Books have traditionally led the field, but also book parts, booklets, ebooks, reports, specialized newsletters, audio or video cassettes, DVDs, blogs, podcasts, speeches, workshops, consulting, computer-based classes or programs, and more. It’s far more profitable, too, when it’s web-centric.

Would we need a huge, trained staff?

You might get by with one trainable half-time employee, but the answer really gets back to the breadth of your offerings, the ways the products are produced and sold, and how much of the process is farmed out or finished by the time you take marketing possession.

Isn’t this a ton of additional work?

The new money and prestige isn’t free, so yes, there is some labor involved. But there are a dozen ways to reduce the labor, or only use it when the end product is worth it. It’s even possible to have an extensive niche product program and never produce an item in house!

Why me?

I wrote three books about the topic (particularly Publishing to Niche Markets), have offered 100+ niche publishing workshops, published scores of niched books (one earning $1.2 million), am a grizzled consulting veteran, and have steered nearly 100 individuals profitably through the process. My experience and your knowledge should cut your time and cost in half.
